I need to find a new home for my Weimaraner. What can I do? Should I just take it to the SPCA or nearest dog shelter?
Bear in mind that an owner-surrendered dog brought to a shelter can be put down the same day. Only strays are held to see if an owner will claim them, usually 72 hours.
A Weimaraner is a unique dog, not suited for those uninformed about them.
Your dog could end up adopted by someone that knows nothing about them and make it even worse for your dog. It could end up "cycled" through more than one home and become very unstable with no roots. If a situation has arisen where you must give up your dog, please contact a rescue agency specificially for Weimaraners. In Texas the main rescue group is
http://www.weimrescuetexas.org/ They are better than you at seeking the right type of new home. Prospective new owners are screened and it is likely that only those who really do want a Weimar will come to the rescue group looking for a dog. They can also use a donation to help defray the cost of hosting your dog until it finds a new home. In fact, it will be expected of you to support the transition for the dog you did once make a commitment to. If the rescue group is full, as often the case, then you might not even have that option.
If you proceed in getting your dog listed with a rescue group, be prepared to provide digital photos. Also, please try to foster the dog yourself until a new home is found. It makes for an easier transition for the dog and saves in expenses for the rescue group, which is always short on cash.
REPEAT: If you love your dog and want to be SURE it goes to a good home, do use the rescue group and support the group. They are very accustomed to screening prospective new owners and know what to look for so that your dog won't go through another separation.
Please DO NOT ever list your dog on Craigslist. It could be very disasterous for your dog. Contact us for an explanation.
Life is full of unexpected events that can affect our lives at any time. Make the right choice for your dog if you have to give it up. If it was a mistake to have gotten your dog, please don't make another one when you send it on to another home. If life has simply given you some circumstances whereby there is no room for the dog in your life now, try to make the transition to a new home as easy as possible.
