I have found the Weimaraner, at least the female (we have no experience with a male) to be one of the most affectionate dogs I have ever had in my life. I know many are trained for hunting and live outside but ours is very spoiled. I know mostly Weim owners whose dogs are the same way - spoiled, to put it mildly. Ours does sleep with us. She likes to be under her own cover on top of the spread, and moans when you cover her up as if to say, "Yes, yes, I love it." She also moans if we just give her a hug after she's bedded down. In the den, she'll sometimes come to sit in your lap - all 60 pounds of her. She, as is their characteristic, often looks at us directly in our eyes. She has never been aggressive toward other people or other dogs. We tell people she approaches that "She won't bite but she might lick you to death." In the house she is very protective as far as listening to outside sounds. She'll bark if anyone approaches the door. She's always ready to play. If you ignore her when she's ready and you're not, then she'll go find something of yours and bring it to you, something like your shoes (ALL of them out of the closet if you continue to ignore her, your socks or any clothing, a hat, anything that has your "smell" on it. When we travel, she'll sit in the car seat as if she's a person and watch traffic and other people. She draws attention from other cars as they expect to see a person sitting in the seat and see a funny dog looking at them. Only on a longer trip will she lay down and rest. She always knows (somehow) when we are getting close to home as she'll get up and start watching for the house, or the squirrels in our neighborhood. She seems to remember the turns and stops and knows when we are close. We didn't intend for this "attachment" to occur at this point in our lives. But it did. (our son's 'fault') However it does give us a great deal of pleasure and it, for us, is one of life's blessings and sincere pleasures, sharing our lives with our Weims. | The following description of "Bubba" was sent in by his adopted family and illustrates another of the happy stories where a rescue dog was adopted from WRNT (Weim Rescue North Texas). Here are two pictures of Bubba. Graduating from Training School Having a nice run. Bubba was rescued in Austin in December 2005 and sent to WRNT in January 2006. We adopted him in February 2006. We don't know why he was given up, but he is a very good boy that knew some commands when we got him and is extremely loyal and grateful. He loves to run but loves chasing and chewing his tennis balls more, especially in water. He is also very noble, sitting for children to pet him, allowing us to take food and toys from him without ever growling, even on the first days of being adopted. He has gotten along with other dogs, sharing his bed and toys with his foster brothers from WRNT. He does not have a problem wearing his seatbelt in the car and even waits patiently in the car for a few minutes. He loves his backpack because he knows it means he is going hiking. He has only jumped on the bed once, because he is scared of thunder. The only major issue is that he does not like being home alone. He does not destroy the house or soil, just scratches at the door because he wants to get to us. I don't know if that is why he was given up, but we have noticed that the other dogs in rescue are, for the most part, good dogs that just need a loving home and some training.
